Hi All
In this week's Pub Crawl I look at free, full text articles appearing in, First Monday, DestinationCRM's Knowledge Management Magazine, Internet Business Magazine, Wired, BizReport, Ananova, SearchEngineReport, Network Computing, About.com's Web Search and Salon.

After this week the Pub Crawl will no longer be posted in the Free Pint Bar. It will be sent out to Free Pinters who sign up as Regulars and avail of our new premium service. You will find all the details here: http://www.freepint.com/regular/

Kevin Elliott of About.com's Web Search has the difficult job of following in the footsteps of Chris Sherman. Yet he seems to be doing that very well. I mention some of his articles below but I would also recommend his newsletter, SearchLight, which you'll find at http://websearch.about.com/

First Monday
http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue6_7/
Douglas A Galbi examines some long term trends in advertising and consumer behaviour and concludes that the growth of the digital economy will depend on increases in people's free time and new forms of social activity rather than new technologies.

Amanda Spink and Okan Gunar examine a large sample of business searching queries sent to Excite and Ask Jeeves. They make some observations about searcher habits and some suggestions about how search tools ought to develop to meet searchers' needs better, especially ecommerce related needs. The tabulated quantitative data makes interesting reading.

Joyce M Latham argues that the Children's Internet Protection Act may interfere with a library's role in providing access to research materials in a neutral and non judgemental way.

Knowledge Management Magazine (DestinationCRM)
http://www.destinationcrm.com/km/dcrm_km_index.asp
Amid large-scale layoffs, knowledge managers must find ways to capture some of the intellectual capital that companies lose when they "downsize". Jason Compton looks at some of the tricks used to stem the flow of knowledge even when budgets have been cut severely. This should stand them in good stead when the economy starts to recover.

Marc Rapport checks out the virtues of taxonomies in information sharing and retrieval and seeks out advice about some of the pitfalls from people who've been involved in taxonomy development. There's more than just technology involved, despite what some vendors may claim. There's a considerable intellectual element too.

Internet Business Magazine
http://www.ibmag.co.uk/
The cover story is about David Lethbridge, managing director of Confetti.co.uk, the marriage portal. It's big and getting bigger, but we are not treated to precise revenue figures.

Internet telephony sounds like a good idea and should save its users a lot of money but it is not of a high enough quality yet. Internet Business takes a look at its present stage of development.

Students are still seen as a good bet when it comes to state and industry finance, apparently. Internet Business lists a few projects that students are presently involved in.

XML is the future...but not yet.

Wired
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,45366,00.html
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,45367,00.html
Some articles about the Webby Awards, the Web's answer to Oscars. And winners' acceptance speeches are limited to five words or fewer. Love it!

BizReport
http://www.bizreport.com/article.php?id=1698
The dotcom downturn is nearing its end, according to a study published in May by Webmergers, writes Michael Bartlett. But things may not improve too quickly. Things seem to be better for business to consumer than for business to business etailers.

Ananova
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_354507.html
It was widely reported earlier in the year that the Encyclopedia Britannica had plans to introduce a paid model for its portal. This is now coming into effect but there is still some free content available on their site.

SearchEngineReport
http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/01/07-ftc.html?source=sday
The US Federal Trade Commission is investigating claims that some search tools are returning paid listings in search results without making it clear that they are advertisements. I noticed a very large number of articles covering this subject so check out Moreover's Online Search Engines section if you want more:
http://www.freepint.com/news/?news_include=searchengines&x=9&y=11

Network Computing
http://www.networkcomputing.com/1215/1215f1.html
It appears that portals are still hot stuff. Anand Bhatt and Joe Fenner look at a few of the products and some of the motivations for acquiring them. There are also some tabulated results from a survey about portal solutions.

About.com's Web Search
http://websearch.about.com/library/weekly/aa071601a.htm
Kevin Elliott gets to test drive a lot of search tools and this week he puts Teoma and WISEnut through their paces. He has high hopes for both, being what he calls "new generation" search tools.

http://websearch.about.com/library/weekly/aa070901a.htm
Kevin also test drove three meta search tools, SurfWax, Vivisimo, and qbSearch. The first was his favourite but you must pay to avail of the full service. Test driving search tools is time consuming, but with guidance like this, it should pay dividends.

Salon
http://salon.com/books/feature/2001/07/19/book_reviews/
Newspaper editors are finding that readers are not as interested in book reviews as they were in the past so they are cutting their coverage. The first page of this article reads like a satire of journalistic practice and is worth reading for that reason alone.

Do let me know if you come across any interesting articles or sources of articles. I wish all Free Pinters a good weekend.
Cheers
Simon
