 Benchmarking/accreditation

I have a question that is a bit too woolly for Google to cope with, so I'm hoping someone on Freepint can help.

First, a bit of background: I am head of a department that has a variety of functions -- research/knowledge management, copy-writing/editing, design, production, new media. None of these functions is entirely understood by colleagues, who either underestimate how difficult the tasks are that they ask us to provide ('find all drug companies that have products in urology by lunchtime') or are excessively impressed by what we think of as comparatively easy tasks. This is a bit demoralising for my staff, because they feel that nobody else is really qualified to tell them whether they are doing a good or bad job.

So my question is, is there a way to get the delivery of each aspect of our work benchmarked/evaluated/accredited, to give my staff professional reassurance (unless of course we're doing a terrible job, which I doubt)?

Any insights that people can offer gratefully received.
Sara
