Saying "to show the dog the rabbit"

Can anyone tell me the meaning and possibly the origin of the saying or colloquialism "to show the dog the rabbit"? I assume it means something like putting your cards on the table and has a dog racing or hunting provenance, but would value input from someone in the know! Web search has not produced anything useful.

Thanks
