 Air versus road safety

Everyone always agrees that traveling by air is safer than traveling by road.
But I've never seen such a study nor figures.

Any idea where I could find figures comparing both?
I imagine that in some way this study must compare the estimated distance people travel by car or airplane on a yearly basis to the estimated number of deaths (by the same distance) for each category.
