To read the article by Sue Mace "Wales: Business, Economic and Government Sources" in Free Pint 96 one would think she has written a definitive resource about the internet in Wales. I guess that links like music are something of a personal preference but I would have to be suspicious of any article written by someone who has an inherent interest in promoting their own site.
I believe that South Wales Information Gateway has for a while been offering businesses in the Swansea area free or low cost website design using European grant funding although this has recently run out. As a website design company based in the West Wales area we try and be as competitive as possible but it is hard to compete against organisations that provide their services for nothing.
One of the websites which she mentioned in her article, www.bestofruralwales.co.uk, is a prime example of this, offering free shopping systems and supposedly promoting the best of rural businesses in Wales, including in the introduction "multimedia". The site has been designed by two firms in Cardiff, hardly rural Wales!!!
Our own firm, Centrepage Design, has set up local content websites featuring useful information and business and accommodation directories for Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Swansea. We are hardly a come and go organisation as she implies about a number of similar directories in Wales as the Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire websites have been around for approaching three years and a considerable amount of time and effort has gone into the sites. More sites are planned.
No European funding has been forthcoming to help us but through our own hard work and resources the websites statistics show that we have been successful in what we set out to acheive. We have not finished though, this is a continual process and we have many more ideas which will be developed as soon as time and resources allow.
We stand or fall by our own skills and ability, this is the way of business. If we fall though we will have our suspicions why.
Wales is getting a lot of European funding at the moment, most of it seems to be going through the official channels, lets see if it gets to the organisations who would know best how to use it.
Did you notice I have not mentioned our websites? This is not a business promotion article, it is a complaint!!! |
