Globastat is a global statistics site that gives country rankings for a number of categories, people, government, economy, transport, etc. The data is collected from the CIA World Factbook, 2001, which aims to collect the most up to date figures available at the time of preparation.
Another source of country data, albeit with a far smaller number of categories, is the UN's InfoNation. This allows you to compare figures for up to five countries. There are figures for population, population density, largest city and surface area. There's also a link to a brief overview of each country.
If you're still not satisfied you can check out the InfoPlease site. This gives more information than the other sites and has links to numerous categories of data.
Finally, the UN has a really vast statistics section for the benefit of the more than curious.
