Does anyone know when it was "discovered" that fruit and vegetables contain anti-oxidants and therefore help to protect against certain types of illness when consumed? Also, can other types of anti-oxidants be substituted - e.g. tea, ginseng, etc? Or is it all a plot to sell more vegetarian produce? Are there any nutritionists out there who could shed any light on this or are there any useful websites giving this sort of info?

Take a look at this http://www.ifrn.bbsrc.ac.uk/EUROFEDA/consumers.htm from the website of EUROFEDA, European Research on Functional Effects of Dietary Antioxidants
