We are working in Word97 on Windows NT on an NT network.
We have a few documents on our system that we set to "prompt for read-only" - ie the user is prompted on opening as to whether read-only access will be sufficient. This is to avoid documents that are frequently consulted and frequently edited being tied up for long periods of time.
For most users, this works OK. The editors can generally get in to edit, and the rest of us can get in to read. However, a few users find that their access is consistently blocked. When they try to open the document, instead of the prompt about read-only, they get the following error message:
Window title: Microsoft Word
Icon: Yellow warning triangle
Message: Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
On the file menu, click Open to open the document. (which is what they're trying)
Make sure the document has a .DOC extension. (which it has)
If we take the prompt option off, they can access the document fine, so they obviously have Windows access to it.
