 Public awareness of information issues

I thought Will Hann made some very good points in this month's Free Pint newsletter editorial. I often feel frustrated by how little the general public know about developments in the information world and how they could be affected by them - it's small comfort to think 'well if only they knew'.

On the other hand, it's an uphill struggle. The coverage in the information press (and virtual communities like this one) goes completely unnoticed in the mainstream press. When issues do get covered, one of two things happens. Either the coverage is inaccurate, incomplete or oversimplified (eg the coverage of the drop in UK public library book issues, which ignored the diversification of public library activity and consequent drop in book buying) or the journalist believes they invented this brand new topic themselves (eg the Guardian Online article on digital archiving a few weeks ago) when it's been discussed at a high level by information professionals for years.

It would be good if we could think of a way to push these issues into the public. Perhaps CILIP has a role in publicising them?
