CIBIT's consultants offer you a framework for organising your capital
of the future: knowledge! The Knowledge Management Masterclass gives
an overview from different perspectives on how knowledge management
(KM) can work for your organisation and how KM initiatives can be
created and implemented.
The Masterclass involves 8 days and will start on 14th October in
Birmingham in the UK. For more details see http://www.cibit.com. For
further information please feel free to contact us at email
info@cibit.com or by telephone +44-1495-774884.
This week we will be looking at covering letters. What to say, and
more importantly what not to say.
Your covering letter is a business document. This is the first thing a
prospective employer sees, so make sure it leaves a good impression.
Use white or ivory paper with blue or black type. Use the same paper,
font and colour for your entire application. Anything else is
considered bad practice.
Set out your letter with your contact details in the top right hand
corner of the page. Avoid using work telephone numbers if at all
possible.
Adding an email address? Then make sure it is a "professional" one.
Do not use "pet names" nicknames or hobbies.
The letter must be dated.
Do not use "Dear Sir or Madam" address the letter to a person.
The first paragraph should state which job you are applying for and
where you saw the advertisement. Important if the organisation has
more than one position on offer.
The second paragraph should summarise the skills and attributes you
possess, use those that are emphasised in the advertisement and/or
application package. Follow with a bit of flattery - use the
organisation's reputation, sales record, size, corporate culture or
any other interesting fact that tells the organisation that you have
cared enough to research the organisation.
The final paragraph should contain a request for a meeting. For
example - "I look forward to meeting with you to discuss my
application in greater depth. I can be contacted on my mobile or
email during the day, or on my home telephone after 6.00pm".
Keep your covering letter to a single page; any more will just detract
from your application.
