The Benefits of Mentoring

Over the weeks we have discussed the benefits of Continuing
Professional Development. However, CPD can be a lonely road at times,
yes you meet lots of people along the way, usually travelling in many
different directions, and whilst some may converge with you at
occasional stops, usually at seminars and networking events, those
moments can be all too brief and it's back to the lonely road once
again as you make decisions about where you want to be and how you are
going to get there.
Of course there are some people who think that they have "made it"
when they get their first professional position. Whilst that's not a
bad assumption, you should remember that working on your job and your
career is just as important as getting a job in the first place, which
is why CPD and networking are so very important. However, often
overlooked in the mix is mentoring.
Some people seem to be quite happy to do their own thing, they have
clear goals and directions, they know what they want and they go
anywhere and do anything in order to achieve it. Then there are people
who drift aimlessly, occasionally going to events that appeal to them,
rarely meeting people outside of working hours to talk about the
profession they find themselves in. And there are those people who
feel that maybe there has to be a better way, why go it alone when
there are hundreds of professionals who have been there and done that,
and can guide them along the better paths towards their goals.
For most people, mentoring is something that you do when you are just
starting out on your career path. But it should not stop as soon as
you have your foot on the corporate ladder. You may change mentors,
after all your needs will change over time, and you should be willing
to give as much information as you receive because mentoring can and
should be a two way street, for example, new graduates have knowledge
of current thinking and research, whereas the person in the workforce
has a real world perspective.
