Your current reading material is a good indication of how serious you
are about Continuing Professional Development. Did you know that the
last half dozen books that you have read is also a good indication of
where you will be headed in the next 12 months? Well it's true. Simply
reading the easy stuff, will not challenge your thinking, will not
develop new skills or thoughts and you will simply drift from day to
day with little thought as to how you could get to the end of another
year without really having achieved anything of note.
For those people who spend a great deal of time researching topics for
clients in a work situation then the situation can be deemed to be
slightly different, as you are reading and analysing all the time. You
may be forgiven for wanting to read the less challenging stuff when
you get home. But if you are a serious student of life and of yourself
then you know that only reading the easy stuff will not get you to
where you know you can be.
Your choice of reading material should be stimulated by your goals. If
you don't have any idea of what you want out of life, then chances are
you won't know what books you should be reading either.
Do you want to achieve promotion and advancement within your
organisation? Or will you need to look elsewhere? Will you have the
necessary skills to take over from the current incumbent, what about
all those jobs that will be made available when the baby boomers
decide to hang up their business suits?
Or will the prize go to those people who have taken the time to
research the skills needed to undertake the work, and then read
absolutely everything that they could lay their hands on in order to
obtain the required knowledge. You can almost guarantee these are the
same people who also take the time to attend industry events in their
own time, and take the time to know what they want to achieve and then
find a way of getting there.
As we move into the new year, why not promise yourself that you will
read something that challenges you each and every day.
So the question is what are you reading at the moment?
