| Is Internet research viable as a full-time career? |

Hi everyone,
Is Internet research viable as a full-time career commercially? I live in Kingston, Jamaica, and I spent three years as an Internet researcher for a community college, finding academic materials etc for lecturers and students, having persuaded the principal to establish the post for me. However, it was closed because of the financially strained situation of the college (a story unfortunately common in Jamaica). I am currently trying to persuade the principals of two tertiary institutions one here and the other in Barbados to establish a similar position for me.
In the absence of, or possibly in addition to, such a position, I am interested in commercial research via the Internet. However, is there much scope for that? I have heard it said that with the increasing power of search engines, commercial Internet research per se does not have much of a future, since most people can do their own research without having to hire a professional.
I should be extremely grateful for the valuable opinions of other researchers on this board. I would dearly like to be able to do Internet research since I am rather an information 'junkie'. I'm the sort of person who, in the absence of other reading matter prior to the Internet, would pick up any available encyclopedia, open it at random, and start reading with pleasure - now I do the same online. However, I must be sure that I'm not allowing my desire to delude myself about what may be the reality.
Sincerely,
Hubert |
