ProSearch is an impressive web-based patent search software product from Pantros IP that uses an intelligent semantic system to provide patent search results and evaluation for patent owners, intellectual property (IP) law practitioners, consultants, investors and others in the IP industry.

As an IP practitioner myself, I have used a variety of patent search software in the past. Several products I have used rely heavily on keyword and Boolean filtering techniques to search patent data. Whilst such patent search tools are useful, they do have inherent limitations that can lead to unsatisfactory search results. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to discover ProSearch. Whilst still providing keyword and Boolean searching features, this intelligent patent search tool is very different from regular keyword/Boolean patent search products. The semantics in the searching is what differentiates this product from others in the field, allowing experts to focus on their strengths, rather than the mechanics of searching.

ProSearch offers a suite of search tools that rely on concept searching techniques that each get you to relevant patent results in the first sweep. Using full-text search queries composed of natural language, the intelligent search engine finds highly relevant patents and understands the concept of your search text, and compares this concept with all patents contained in the Pantros patent database. Results are relevancy ranked, giving you the most important documents at the top of the list. By understanding the concept of your search text, ProSearch can find potentially relevant patents that would otherwise be missed based on keyword type searching. This is a truly powerful patent searching tool.

In addition to having a specific and large number of datapoints and worldwide access and patent coverage, ProSearch provides some very interesting and useful features including side by side claim comparison feature tools, the ability to change the selected patent authority at each phase of the search and a recorder tool for recording activity per project and client.

A user of ProSearch can tailor the search engine to search patent literature for issued or pending patents to serve a variety of commercial and technological objectives. These include assessing the patentability of an invention, tracking and evaluating a competitor or a particular technology or assessing whether a product, process or service may be considered to be infringing an existing patent.

ProSearch represents a powerful means of bringing semantics to the patent search process.
