It's early September, and the weather is starting to turn. With the late summer bank holiday in the UK and celebration of Labor Day in the US, many of us have had our final picnics and sent our children back to school. Businesses everywhere seem to be shaking up their summer schedules and gearing up for busy days.

With the relaunch of ResourceShelf and DocuTicker last week, we've had a great opportunity to reconnect with blogging colleagues who have offered their congratulations, useful opinions and commentary.

Because we post hundreds of items every month, it would be impossible for us to select only 5 Favourite Tipples. Instead, here's a quick look at only a small number of those blogs that have cited ResourceShelf in the past few months. We're all part of a dynamic conversation on the evolution of information:

  • David Lee King blogs on social media, libraries and related trends from the public library in Topeka.

  • The Shifted Librarian offers up Jenny Levine's thoughts and observations on how users have moved from pursuing information to receiving information (the 'information shift').

  • No Shelf Required talks everything e-books, under the aegis of Sue Polanka.

  • Collaborative Librarianship News is, appropriately, a collaboration of Valerie Horton, Joseph Kraus and Robin Hastings, discussing exciting developments on collaborative information work, library projects and more.

  • At The M Word, Kathy Dempsey takes on the topic of marketing in libraries with verve.

  • Free Government Info covers, well, free government info, primarily for the US federal government; they even include a feed of the most recent titles posted in DocuTicker.

But again, these are only a tiny handful of our friends out there. Thanks for the dialogue - may it long continue!

Turning complaints into compliments in a city library service

'Putting customers first' is a core value for service organisations and what better way to do this than by addressing their issues before they have raised them formally? Twitter is awash with enquiries and complaints and, if these can be tracked down and addressed in a proactive way, it will leave the customers with a very positive feeling about that organisation. Graham Mainds describes how Edinburgh City Libraries turned complaints into compliments by setting up Twitter alerts.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'These days lots of conversations are taking place on Twitter and there are a number of Twitter alert services you can use, including TweetBeep and Twilert, to find out what people are saying about you, if not actually - and this is the important part - to you. Edinburgh City Libraries have used alerts to answer enquiries, address complaints and find audiences.'

The Mail Online is the latest UK news website to prevent media monitoring service Meltwater from crawling its content. Mail Online owner, the Daily Mail and General Trust, is joining News Corporation with this move, although it has a different strategy regarding pricing and distribution. Whilst The Times online has gone behind a paywall, the Mail's online content remains free to view and articles continue to be available via Nexis and Factiva.

News Clippings
The publishing industry continues to shift with the fallout from the recession and ongoing structural changes. In the first six months of 2010, 90 magazines were launched in the US and Canada according to MediaFinder, and 87 ceased publication. Both of these figures are down on the same period for 2009, when 187 new titles were launched and 279 folded. Looking at business-to-business magazines, 35 titles have ceased publication, 17 new titles have launched, and seven have dropped their print editions. MediaFinder points out that acquisitions prevented the numbers being higher, with 'smaller companies [taking] advantage of the opportunity to buy magazines from Reed Business Information and Nielsen Business Media, who were struggling to divest themselves quickly of many b-to-b titles.' Examples include Sandow Media's acquisition of eight publications including Interior Design and Furniture Today, and the Ten Alps acquisition of Asian media properties including a number of business titles, both from Reed.

The BBC is increasingly finding ways to exploit and make more freely available its vast collection of visual and aural content. The latest example of this is its British Novelists Archive Collection. This is a complement to a BBC TV series, In Their Own Words: British Novelists. But whereas the series of necessity relies on short clips of interviews with leading authors as it charts the history of the 20th century British novel, this website is an archive of complete interviews and talks. These vary in length from five minutes up to an hour, and in year of broadcast from 1937 (Virginia Woolf) to 2009 (Zadie Smith).

Care has been taken to present a mixture of writers, which implicitly charts the gradual shift during the century from a literary field dominated by white males to one in which women and minorities are clearly visible and audible, through examples like Margaret Drabble, Angela Carter, Salman Rushdie and Hanif Kureishi...
