DocuTicker relaunched last month, pulling tens of thousands of report citations into a database format, and we've enjoyed watching usage explode. We rely on countless 'fishing holes' to find quality resources, and we are always grateful for links, nudges in the right direction and questions that force us to dig deeper.

Turnabout is fair play: Here's a quick look at only a small number of those blogs that have cited DocuTicker:

  • The Journalist's Toolbox by the Society for Professional Journalists is more like a treasure chest of great resources.

  • The Public Health InfoLinks list maintained by the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University is a great collection of field-specific, general-interest and alternative media resources on health and healthcare.

VIP issue 82CI Software: Surveying the blurry landscape

In addition to analysis of information industry news and in-depth reviews of content products, VIP publishes features written by experts on emerging trends and thorny problems in information strategy. September's VIP No. 82 featured an overview of software for competitive intelligence, a growing product category that often brings together aggregation of sources with data visualisation. VIP has also commissioned author Scott Brown to write VIP Reports on Products to cover the packages he mentions; this series is scheduled to begin in December 2010.

What is CI software? What are we talking about?

Here's where we begin to get lost in the somewhat blurry landscape of CI tools and software.

If you have ever investigated 'CI software' for your organisation, you may have had a hard time making sense of what's available in this space. You may even be struggling with figuring out what the software should do for you. In fact, what makes CI software 'CI software' anyway?

In some respects, it almost comes down to this: does the vendor market the product as a competitive intelligence product? If so, then it is a competitive intelligence product.

I believe part of the current confusion in this space is due to a few factors. One is the increasing number of information professionals moving into intelligence work. Speaking from an info pro perspective, I believe that, because we are steeped in a variety of information sources and tools, we see some so-called 'CI tools' as duplicate, and often deficient, in their functionality. I've looked at some CI software in the past, and have been hard-pressed to see why I wouldn't simply use, for example, Google Reader as a better and more flexible platform for gathering information feeds. This kind of 'seen that, have seen it done better' mentality is certainly valuable. But I believe this mindset can also hinder us from seeing these solutions clearly at times.

Another factor is the rise of social tools and social functionality which has created new and evolving competitive tools. Some social tools, like LinkedIn, are proving to be powerful CI tools all on their own, and CI practitioners and researchers are using them effectively. The FUMSI Folio Report on Competitive Intelligence demonstrates this phenomenon in some depth.

As a result, traditional software vendors are integrating social features into their software. In October 2009, VIP published a report on Digimind 7. Author Jonathan Gordon-Till talked about some of the capabilities of the Digimind software that are infused with social aspects, such as visualisation and word clouds. Collaboration - whether this means that organisation members are able to submit information into the CI software, or that the software integrates with wikis internally - is another social element popping up in CI software. We'll increasingly see these kinds of features in CI software, and because social tools are evolving, so will the CI software space.

The solutions

So where from here? Digimind, reviewed in October 2009, certainly continues to garner a lot of buzz. Some of the established solutions in CI software include:

  • Comintelli's Knowledge XChanger
  • Cipher Systems' Knowledge.Works
  • Wincite Systems - focus on 'knowledge networking'.

Other solutions that have been gaining buzz lately include:

  • Intelligence Plaza from Global Intelligence Alliance
  • Axxone.Strategy
  • Fuld's Competitive Intelligence Portal (specifically for SharePoint)
  • Strategy Software - competitor information management system
  • Astragy - offered as an SaaS platform
  • Denodo.

Over the next few months we'll look at some of these solutions in depth. We also may have the opportunity to look at some of the many other solutions that fall into the CI software category - or somewhere near it - including:

  • QL2
  • KB Crawl - website monitoring
  • SuccessFactors CubeTree - a collaboration solution
