Content To-go or Just Say No?

On the train into New York City to attend the Information Industry Summit (IIS) last week, I noted a row of travellers using: a Nook, a Kindle and an iPad. At different times during the trip, all three had at least one other device out and running at the same time. On the trip home, the train was abuzz with the usual trilling, tapping and talking on mobile phones. Notably, two women across the aisle each had an iPad and were furiously collaborating on something (work or entertainment I could not say ... though the distinction is increasingly blurred, I suppose). Mind you, this is all without the benefit of wifi as New York commuter rail doesn't yet offer it.

It would be easy to glance around at the plethora of smartphones and the increasing number of eReaders and iPads in use - much less the predictions for the multitude of new tablets scheduled to enter the market this year - and assume that not only is most of the world connected via mobile devices, but it is also voraciously consuming content on them. The answer is of course: yes. Perhaps surprisingly, it is also: no.

Content to-goThe theme of this year's IIS was "Moving from wired to wireless". Given that this event brings together information industry companies with the enabling technology providers, it wasn't a surprise that the presenters were, in large part, bullish on mobile content delivery. Certainly, the presentations were peppered with wonderful examples of emerging mobile solutions. Particularly compelling were those clearly integrated into workflow; those that fitted seamlessly into ways of working away from the desktop in professions such as real estate and sales.

However, as risky as it is not to ready one's business for each wave of technology, it is also unwise to navigate blindly. And all routes must start and end with the user. FreePint's own Robin Neidorf took the stage to provide information product and service providers with insights into what end users in knowledge professions really think about mobile solutions in her presentation "The enterprise app gap: research on slow adoption of mobile content in the enterprise".

There's been a good deal of anecdotal evidence that mobile is on the must-have list for users everywhere. However, Neidorf's presentation - based on her FreePint Research Report: Enterprise Market for Mobile Content as well as her just-released phase two of this mobile research project: FreePint Research Report: User Interest in Mobile Content, which provides the results of end user research on mobile demands, limitations and growth inhibitors in the enterprise - contradicted many common assumptions.

The crowd - gathered together to explore the next big thing in information - was clearly surprised to hear that end users were not demanding mobile at a breakneck pace. Certainly, though, neither vendors nor information managers can afford to run headlong into mobile offerings without a clear picture of how mobile content fits into workflow. In this issue, we've gathered together a few key FUMSI resources that offer insights into how mobile is making inroads into the enterprise. Thus, through our research and in our coverage, we at FreePint endeavour to inform decision making so that information and action fit business processes to help get work done more effectively, be it on the desktop, on the go or wherever innovation and inspiration will take us next.

 My Favourite Tipples

When I first started focusing on library marketing about 17 years ago, there wasn't much information out there. As editor of Marketing Library Services newsletter, it wasn't easy for me to find practitioners to write case studies or to find six books per year to review. Now, nearly everyone understands the importance, and if they're not doing serious marketing and promotion, at least they know they should be and they're eager to learn about it. I'm still editing and writing -- and now also consulting -- in this area, so I need good sources of information and inspiration on a regular basis. Here are some of my faves:

  • PRTalk: I use this ALA listserv to keep my finger on the pulse of people in North American public libraries whose jobs include marketing, public relations, advocacy, fundraising, and campaign / program planning. A great group of people answer each others' questions by sharing their own successes, failures, ideas, and brainstorms. Sounds simple, but it shows me exactly what topics they're interested in, what level they're working at, and what the trends are. You don't have to be an ALA member to subscribe and it's not enough to flood your in-box. (There's also an AcademicPR list, but it's not very active.)

  • Facebook: I'm hooked on Facebook, and use it for professional as well as social purposes. Many of my "friends" are info industry veterans who represent a wide range of positions, so what they post gives me a broad view of what's new and interesting in the field. I also enjoy following certain libraries to see how they promote their activities. The fun aspect of Facebook makes the learning seem less like work. I also have a presence for my own business. Social media is essential for marketing these days, so I walk the walk.

  • Newsweek: Yes, I actually read it in paper. Decades ago, I chose a career in print journalism and I still support it. I also follow Newsweek on Facebook, and I go to its website to get links to stories that I want to share electronically. Newsweek delivers a quick overview of the world, including politics, economics, science, health, and culture. It does mention info tech and even libraries sometimes, and I blog about that coverage when I find it. I think it's important to see how the outside world discusses our business. Besides, it gives me something juicy to read when I'm sick of staring at a screen.

  • Huffington Post: Here's a news aggregator that delivers good stuff that's short enough to digest quickly. It also covers a wide variety of topics. The site is the epitome of real news with well-designed ways to share and discuss it. This is a social site done right. HuffPo shows libraries some love too, and the comments reveal how people view libraries, information, and the internet today.

  • This Week in Libraries: TWIL is the first global library show; it streams live on Friday mornings but I usually watch the archived episodes on my own schedule. Its planners / producers are a duo of Dutch librarians who travel the world and visit libraries with the mission of sharing their stories. Each episode features an interview with a Big Cheese from Libraryland. I'm interested in how the guests discuss, represent, and promote our field. This Week in Libraries gives me an enjoyable way to keep up with the industry from a global perspective. And when I'm tired of reading about libraries, watching this show is a breath of fresh air.

Certainly, it was no easy matter before, but this blessing of seemingly infinite content resources delivered in myriad contexts and endlessly passed along via email, shared links, shared bookmarks, tweets, blog posts and more has made keeping up with copyright an incredibly challenging task. Add to that the complexity of licensing models, international legal differences, as well as some users' perception that anything online is free for the taking, using, remixing, and the challenge of understanding and managing copyright becomes more than most of us care to consider, much less manage.

VIP Magazine features VIP Horizon, a brief summary of important news in the information industry, interpreted to help information managers communicate upward regarding strategy, risk management and planning for change.

The most recent issue of VIP (No. 86) features the following in VIP Horizon:

Generation Y will be the dominant workplace group by 2020, presenting big problems for enterprises that are not using collaborative platforms. Valuing recognition over money, they'll set a high value on openness and look to constant coaching and mentoring.

The trouble is that the current toolkit for corporate collaboration and communication isn't working; email isn't a suitable medium for collaborative working, and in any case, only 11% of teenagers are using it. But not only are the new tools inadequate as yet, they also won't work without a management culture change, encompassing a new 'lite' approach to internal corporate governance.

Business professionals remain significantly ahead of consumers in using the mobile web, according to a new report from the Financial Times. In a parallel prediction, IT analyst Gartner believes that, by 2014, 90% of organisations will support corporate applications on personal devices - mainly because individual employees will prefer to use their own consumer hardware rather than 'old-style limited enterprise devices'.

There are security issues, acknowledges another analyst, Ovum; the challenge will be to embrace mobile technology while maintaining a balance between user productivity and corporate security. If Gartner is to be believed, enterprises have about three years to achieve it.

Corporate information budgets are not keeping pace with the rise in content prices, according to figures from the information consultant Outsell. Consequently, parallel FreePint survey findings indicate that information managers regard making do with free resources as 'by far the most important strategy for coping with reduced content budgets'.

But whether content is free or paid for, professional information managers are clear that it must be unique, although the other criteria they apply differ between the free and fee-based sources. And, bearing in mind the amount of raw data now being released by governments, free doesn't necessarily mean second rate.

With a predicted 40 million iPads in use by the end of 2011, many eyes are focusing on Times owner Rupert Murdoch's Daily. But Richard Branson has brought out an iPad publication for the creative industries, Scandinavian publisher Bonnier is to launch two business titles, and more interactive products for business will surely follow.

But if a device has an antenna for downloading publications, it could also transmit back information on your reading. How valuable might it be to someone to know which trade journals, for instance, are being downloaded and read by members of a particular buy side firm?

Whatever may eventually happen to WikiLeaks, companies will need to adapt to a world where no secret is safe. The danger now is of a double whammy - companies failing to get to grips with the vulnerability of their information, just as the potential number of leak outlets starts to proliferate.

There's evidence of more than 100 further groups also releasing sensitive data. Merely keeping track of them will be just one of many new challenges for senior staff concerned with due diligence, competitor analysis or simple damage limitation - and it's still unclear how prepared companies are to meet the threat.
