Facing the future of information interface

Does finding and using quality scientific, technical and medical information have to be rocket surgery? Considering the target market, there shouldn't be an issue of the tool being too tough, right?

Well, there are a couple of problems with this (long-held) belief about many information tools: first off, no matter how smart your user is, most powerful tools require some investment of learning time to create true ease-of-use, and most researchers would rather spend their time analysing the information than locating it.

Learn to use toolsSecondly, the pool of potential users for all information tools is broadening. This presents an exciting opportunity for information vendors. At the same time, it poses the challenge of creating a user experience that reflects the needs and abilities of an increasingly diverse range of users.

Times have changed and so have information tools. Many readers will be familiar with Dialog, a venerable force in the industry offering online resources since 1967. Dialog has gone through many changes in content sets, target market and user interface in the intervening decades.

Dialog was most recently acquired in July 2008 by ProQuest, from Thomson Reuters, at which time many hoped that that ProQuest would invest in interface development to help Dialog catch up with the "2.0" competition.

Things are looking good: according to reviewer Joanna Ptolomey, the latest edition of ProQuest Dialog was developed with heavy reliance on customer feedback ... and it shows. In her VIP Report: Product Review of Dialog, Joanna points out that "this new version is inviting in its make-up. It attracts inexperienced or infrequent searchers and can satisfy them, but has the in-built mechanics to make the experienced searcher satisfied with the experience".

Of course Joanna — a highly-experienced searcher in her own right — recognises that satisfying a broader user base has altered some of the comfortably familiar aspects for those acquainted with previous editions of Dialog. Yet it seems that the market for STM content would ignore the change in end user demographics at its peril. On a good day, information informs decision making at every level of organisations of all types. Today, we find ourselves at the business end of ever more information access and we are left to find and fit pieces of information on our own. Yet with the right tools and training at our disposal, we will all be equipped to make all this information work for us.

Science and Technology Focus

As a former engineer and engineering manager, now running a research and consulting practice focused in a variety of science and technology areas, I use a great variety of databases and sources to keep up with specific technology arenas. I also have some favorite starting points for technology areas I am not as commonly involved in. Limited to just a few Tipples, here are my top picks to click.

  • BtoB Magazine's Vertical Insight Guide: a great set of starter links for 16 business and technology areas focusing on core publications and events, as well as associations and general resources. Though the overall PDF available for purchase is from 2009, the individual sections track the periodic updates from the magazine. Other great BtoB resource collections include their Marketers Resource Guide, Interactive Marketing Guide, Lead Generation Guide, and Email Marketer Insight Guide.

  • Cipher's Syndicated Research Providers Searchable Database: This is another great starting place from where a pull down menu brings up a linked list of up to a couple of dozen market research firms covering some 19 mostly technology sectors. You're left to your own devices to search their offerings or repositories of published literature that may cover various research studies, but it quickly tells you who covers the ground.

  • Science.gov: searches over 45 databases and over 2000 selected websites from 14 federal agencies, mining some 200 million pages of authoritative U.S. government science and R&D information. Other favorite U.S. government science sources include USA.gov Science topic area, the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), and the National Academies Press (NAP).

  • Kurzweil Accelerating Intelligence: This is a favorite source for forecasts and insights on accelerating technological change, as well as a primo news source for keeping up with a wide and eclectic range of technological innovation. Raymond Kurzweil is an AI pioneer, inventor of many enabling technologies for the disabled, and the provocative proponent of the approaching Singularity. Subscribe to the free daily or weekly version of the Kurzweil AI site's newsletter and hold onto your hat.

  • MIT Technology Review: a great magazine on innovation and insight I've taken for decades in hard copy. Still love the tangible feel and scanning the pages, though I also surf their site for specific reasons and the occasional distraction. They have a number of free newsletters I really enjoy and recommend including their daily Emerging Technology Update and weekly ones covering BioMedicine, Business Impact, Communications, Computing, Energy, Materials, and the Web.

    Thinking globally about information
    Did you hear the one about the 75-year old Georgian woman who accidentally sliced through an underground cable and caused internet services in her country and neighbouring Armenia to crash? This is no joke: the BBC reported that a 75-year-old woman admitted to damaging fibre optic cables while scavenging for copper. The cables, owned by the Georgian Railway Telecom company, serve eastern Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. While it is easy to forget how tenuous the connections can be, the ripple effect this outage caused reminds us that we are, indeed, all connected.

    Globalisation is more than a business buzz word; it is a fact of life. While there are certainly opportunities for doing good business locally, the interconnectedness of information mandates an increasing awareness of global markets and opportunities. In a presentation I recently heard at the Buying & Selling eContent conference (of which I am co-chair), I learned that Asia currently has more than three times as many internet users as North America and 75% more than Europe. The speaker, Ben Sargent from Common Sense Advisory, also pointed out that while English is still one of the top two "mega languages" that dominate the web, simplified Chinese is closing in fast (and Spanish and Arabic are not to be ignored).

  • [FreePint] Community, SharePoint, and Info Mana...

    An info pro by any other name
    Last week, I attended the Computers in Libraries Conference for the first time. This event is very practitioner-focused and as an industry watcher, well, it simply hadn't risen up high on my priority list given how many events there are in the information industry. Now that I've been, CIL has moved well up that list. First off, the event attracted about 2,000 attendees. More significantly, the level of attendee engagement and interaction at this event - important markers of event quality - was high. Listening to audience questions was almost as interesting as the sessions themselves.

    During one session I attended, a panel on EBook Publishing: Practices & Challenges, the moderator asked for a show of hands about job positions: public libraries, university libraries, special or corporate libraries ... and for each, many hands rose. However it was clear that not everyone had responded so the moderator dug deeper, revealing that the packed room contained "the usual suspects" along with a remarkable number of knowledge managers, researchers and information professionals by other names.

The ALISS project - sharing data to support people with long term health conditions

Searching the web for information about medical conditions can mean that you are swamped with useless, and often disconcerting, results. This is particularly true when you need help and support with a long-term health condition rather than descriptions of symptoms and treatments. The ALISS project aims to overcome this for people in Scotland by unlocking information currently in databases, lists and directories.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'The ALISS project was born out of the desire to make it easier to discover, share, link up and use information about living well with long-term health conditions; to find and link up information that is often locked up in databases, lists and directories. The ALISS Engine will be an index of links to the records that directory services around Scotland are already gathering - but it will be open to all, taking information out of the silos and onto the web for all to see.'

Companies in Britain that want to pitch to potential customers online and then engage with them via Twitter are facing new regulation of their activities. The Advertising Standards Authority's jurisdiction now extends to marketing communications on companies' own websites and brand activity on social media.

In addition, an amendment to the European Union Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive comes into effect in May, requiring organisations to ask visitors to their websites for permission before they store information about them, for example using cookies. Both moves have serious implications for businesses engaging in eCommerce, whether using their own or proprietary software.

Businesses that are currently developing social media applications may find themselves having to rethink if new European privacy laws come into effect. And, although the Europeans and Americans may currently think differently on matters of privacy, there are signs that the United States may not be far behind.

European Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding wants EU privacy law to encompass the right to be forgotten, and protection regardless of data location. Meanwhile the Obama administration is contemplating a privacy bill of rights and a statutory "do not track" setting on websites — possibly to overcome current restrictions on US companies processing European data.

Business-to-business directory provider ZoomInfo has suggested that business or work information should be regulated differently from personal or behavioural data. Its Business Information Manifesto points out that, historically, employee information has been seen as proprietary, often the result of a decision made by a company to alleviate poaching of employees, but also to protect them.

But ZoomInfo's CEO Yonatan Stern believes that, if individuals' data is accurate and accessible to others (potential partners, collaborators, customers, service providers) commerce can happen more efficiently and in a timelier manner. The problem is, it's not always easy to differentiate between business and private usage.

Regulation is a key concern for respondents to Forbes Insights' recent Strategic Initiatives Study. They are cautiously optimistic that well-considered plans can still yield productive initiatives, but recognise the need to take careful steps about being better informed — and they're particularly concerned that initiatives often fail because of lack of buy-in from ill-informed stakeholders.

Respondents to the Economist Intelligence Unit's new Risk Radar survey also regard regulation as a key risk. But they're especially worried too about security breaches and cyber attacks — and the EIU suggests that the controversy surrounding WikiLeaks may be making businesses more information security conscious.

Technology analyst Gartner believes that 2011 will be "the year of platform as a service" — referring to the layer of cloud technology architecture that contains all application infrastructure services. But it also highlights risks that CIOs should address when contracting for cloud services, suggesting that contract terms usually favour the vendor.

Another analyst, Ovum, has further warned that enterprises are not taking the threat of cyber-espionage seriously enough, as criminals graduate from credit cards and banking details to product blueprints and customer lists. Such developments raise the question of whether the cloud really is a safe place to store proprietary data.
