Stealth mode and exposing undercover information

You can't blame a start-up for operating in stealth mode. It makes sense that, if you are in the initial phases of product rollout, you'd want to limit exposure of possibly negative (even if constructive) feedback. There's also something sort of cool about the whole stealth concept - could be from the James Bond Stealth Ship or from the stealth fighters it is modelled after, with the point being to stay under the radar and avoid detection.

Stay under the radarYet in my years chasing up news stories about information industry companies and products, I find more than a few organisations in seemingly perpetual stealth mode. In some cases, they are such large companies that, regardless of how many contacts I make, I can't begin to navigate their Byzantine machinations. In these cases, I've even had contacts confidentially confess that they can't reliably figure out who does what in their own companies.

Then, of course, there are organisations that have had a difficult go in the press and retrench until the fallout blows over. Sometimes these companies take a different (equally obfuscating) approach, in which they hire spin doctors to generate quantities of vacuous coverage in an effort to distract us from the less appealing (if newsworthy) aspects of their company's activities.

And then there are those in which no news seems to be good news as one doesn't hear anything negative about the organisation. Yet the lack of information flow strikes one as a somewhat eerie silence. Calm before the storm? Something to hide? Or just so busy doing business that media exposure falls off the To Do list?

In any of these cases, there is an audience out there that wants to know. An audience for whom an understanding of the companies with whom they are working or considering doing business with is essential. So while companies may have their reasons for flying low, there remains a need for coverage. I'm confident that if you're reading my column, you find this situation familiar. And you know how to persevere until you uncover the knowledge needed.

As ever, we're your allies on this front. Our research division has turned its sights on some of the information industry players that our customers have found difficult to track. Like you, we don't plan to take "no, you don't need to know" for an answer. Interestingly, our debut foray in this area already resulted in an improved relationship with a vendor we've not covered much in the past: Meltwater Group. As our director of research worked on her comprehensive coverage, delivered in our FreePint Research Report: Insights on Meltwater, she was also able to provide our readers with a mini review of Meltwater Press.

These research reports, in which we will examine Bloomberg, Dow Jones Factiva and Thomson Reuters among others, offer a comprehensive view of companies including an analysis of their business structure, finances, product lines, customer focus and more.

While in a military context stealth has been a remarkably successful technology, it is recognised that it is not invulnerable. Stealth relies not only on its ability not to be detected by radar, but also on its ability not to be detected by other means. And by other means, by any means, it is our job to reveal essential insights about the players in this industry.

I need to keep an eye on the changes in the search industry, with a particular focus on open source options, as I work to deliver search solutions for clients. These favourites help keep me up to date on tools as well as insights into problems faced and emerging solution strategies.

  • The LinkedIn Enterprise Search Professionals Group: aimed at product managers, developers, designers, and search tool users, this group is made up of a friendly and interesting bunch of search experts and includes some lively and informative discussions.

  • On Twitter: @miles_kehoe from New Idea Engineering and @searchtools_avi (a "librarian at heart" who monitors search tools) are some of my favourite tweeters on search.

  • Open: A blog written by technology journalist and consultant Glyn Moody. He focuses on more general open source and software news and issues. I also follow him on Twitter @glynmoody.

  • BeyondSearch: Steve Arnold's blog, which covers search and related issues. Mind you, he's not one to pull his punches! Steve and his team monitor search, content processing, text mining and related topics and provide insights along with information.

  • Enterprise Search Meetups: lists physical search related get togethers across the world - including our own Cambridge one.

  • Cabume: aims to get under the hood of the business and technology communities centred around Cambridge, UK is my favourite for local business news.

Charlie Hull is the co-founder of Flax, an open source search consultancy that has been building innovative search solutions for over a decade for clients including The Financial Times. Hull blogs about search and will be presenting at Enterprise Search Europe in London and Apache Lucene Eurocon in Barcelona.

How many times have we read about public sector construction projects failing to deliver on time, to specification and to cost? But what role does information play in this and does it lead to better outcomes not just for the tax payer but also for the contractors involved? Paul Wilkinson tells us about a new way to do business in the UK construction industry; with information collaboration and sharing at its heart, BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the future.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Building information modelling (BIM) started in the 1980s when many architects and engineers were making the transition from hand-drawn designs to computer-aided design (CAD). It effectively adds other dimensions beyond 3D. First, the model can be used to show how the building will be constructed (including time, so 4D); then you can associate cost data (5D), and then other aspects such as its energy use and sustainability credentials can be modelled. As a result, some commentators describe it as nD. The value of BIM also extends beyond design and construction, delivering information that an asset owner can use for facilities management, refurbishment or eventual demolition, for example.'

Tumblr may not be as well known as Wordpress or Twitter but it offers an interesting alternative because it is easy to set up, and allows you to publish as much or as little as you want using a free iPhone app, by email or by phone. In this first part of a two-part article, Will Myddelton and Martin Belam explain why Tumblr is popular.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Tumblr is a publishing platform that allows users to build up a web scrapbook of text, quotes, links and images. It has different categories of information which has had an impact on user behaviour. The fact that it encourages the posting of just one photo or just one quote from the net makes it closer to a "microblogging" platform than a "blogging" platform. This can be less intimidating for users as they are not confronted with the expectation that they are going to have to type out 350 words before they can hit publish. Setting up is easy. It takes less than 30 seconds - enter your email, specify a password, choose a URL and you're ready to publish.'

As the use of mobile devices continues to grow, smartphones may be making the running at the moment but the media industry sees tablets as offering the biggest commercial opportunities. Nevertheless take-up of tablets is currently low - and a recent FreePint survey revealed all sorts of concerns about the deployment of mobile devices generally.

But evidence suggests that employees aren't going to wait for their companies to institute their use formally - even though research commissioned by the Chartered Management Institute suggests that home-based use of mobile devices for continuing professional development may add three weeks to an employee's working year.

Research by Forbes magazine as it launches its European edition suggests that reading stories in print as opposed to online can lead to better business decision making. Consequently, company head Steve Forbes believes that it is impossible to have an online presence without a print presence as well.

A further study by Gartner suggests that, although the time people spend reading on screen now almost equals that spent reading print, something much more complicated than simple substitution is taking place. Information managers will face tough budgetary decisions on the right balance to be struck between print and digital content provision.
